Rabat - The Embassy of Russia in Rabat announced today that Morocco has suspended direct flights to and from Russia.
“Flights in transit through third countries are not subject to these restrictions. We urge passengers on canceled direct flights to take this information into account,” the embassy said in a statement.
Russia has been experiencing a third wave of COVID-19 since September, and the stituation appears to have deteriorated in the past few days.
According to the latest reports, Russia now records over 25,000 new COVID cases per day.
The increase in the number of cases “comes as vaccination rates in the country remain stagnantly low and the government shuns imposing tough restrictions to stem the spread,” Post Register reported earlier today.
Russia also reported 895 new deaths in the past 24 hours, the country’s highest daily death toll since the start of the pandemic.
“This month records in fatalities came every other day: the previous record, of 890 deaths, was registered on Sunday, and the one before that, of 887 deaths, occurred on Friday,” according to Post Register.
Morocco is still under a state of emergency that the country initially announced in March 2020.
The measure, which has been extended or relaxed in accordance with Morocco’s epidemiological situation, has allowed the country’s authorities to adopt a proactive and largely successful response to the COVID crisis.
Last week, the Moroccan government eased its preventive measures after observing a remarkable improvement in the country’s epidemiological situation.
Many public spaces have been reopened and flights have been operating to and from Morocco as part of the gradual reopening of borders since mid-June.
