Rabat - King Mohammed VI chaired today at the royal palace in Rabat a working meeting on Morocco's renewable energies sector.

A statement from the royal palace said the working meeting is part of the King's regular assessment of Morocco's 'strategic objectives' related to the development of renewable energies.

One of the key objectives is Morocco's goal to produce over 52% of its electricity through renewable energies.

Through this strategy, Morocco aims to produce a majority of its energy to reduce its independence on oil-rich countries.

The North African country is home to several renewable energy projects that made international headlines – particularly the Ouarzazate solar power station.

In 2019, CNN said the project produces enough electricity to power a city the size of Prague, or twice the size of Marrakech.

During today's meeting, King Mohammed VI received a presentation on the progress of the renewable energy development program.

King Mohammed VI instructed the government to accelerate the development of renewable energies, in particular solar and wind energies.

'By building on its progress, Morocco should accelerate the deployment of renewable energies in order to strengthen its energy sovereignty, reduce energy costs and position itself in the low-carbon economy in the decades to come,' the statement said.

To boost the sector, the King has called for the acceleration of the realization of the three Noor Midelt solar energy projects.

The monarch also ordered the development of an operational and incentive 'Morocco Offer,' covering the entire value chain of the green hydrogen sector in Morocco.

'It should include, in addition to the regulatory and institutional framework, the plan of the necessary infrastructures,' the statement concluded.
