Minister Highlights Morocco's Ambitious Energy Strategy

    24 Jun 2022

Marrakech - Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali highlighted, Thursday in Marrakech, Morocco's ambitious energy strategy based on renewable energies, the development of energy efficiency, and regional capacity building.

'Under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, we have adopted an ambitious energy strategy based on renewable energy, energy efficiency and regional integration,' said Benali in an address by video conference at a high-level meeting of Mediterranean Energy Regulators, held under the theme 'A coherent regulation to accelerate the energy transition in light of the constraints of security of supply.'

This strategy, which is more relevant than ever, is based on three objectives: sustainability, flexibility and competitiveness, explained the Minister, stating that Morocco has an 'undeniable competitive advantage' in generating the most competitive kWh and the most low-carbon.

Benali called on the energy regulators of the Mediterranean to establish a coherent regulation to ensure accelerated energy transition in light of the issues of security of supply and the crucial objectives of sustainable development.

She stressed, in this sense, the 'increasingly central' role of regulators, including the Association of Mediterranean Energy (MEDREG), which includes 27 regulators from 22 countries of the European Union, the Balkans and North Africa.

During this meeting, the heads of the energy regulatory authorities of the Mediterranean discussed several topics such as the energy transition in the Mediterranean and the surge in energy prices.

Organized for the first time in Morocco by the Moroccan Electricity Regulatory Authority (ANRE) in partnership with MEDREG, the high-level brought together several Moroccan institutions and over 50 energy experts from more than 20 countries of the Mediterranean to discuss energy challenges in the context of international crises.
